Luigi Lloyd loom

The American Marshall Burns Lloyd, owner of a rattan and wicker furniture producing company, was, due to the raging WW1, unable to import enough cane and wicker from the former Dutch Indies and Philippines.

To compensate for the shortage of wicker, he invented a method to wrap thin steel wire with a 1st kraft packing paper in 1917. These wrapped wires could be woven on a loom, just like the workers used to do with wicker. This weave had all the same distinctive qualities: fine mesh, regular pattern, highly tensile and a finish resembling wicker fabric. Marshall Burns Lloyd called this new product "Lloyd-Loom".

Lloyd-Loom furniture became a true fad in the US. Lloyd produced millions of rolls. His slogan sounded: 'Neither cane nor wicker ... even better!' Due to the American success in the "roaring twenties", Lloyd licensed an English manufacturer who used the Lloyd-Loom fabric in an entirely new fashion to create a romantic English collection.

Lloyd-Loom became outrageously popular in Europe as well. Lloyd-Loom furniture was to be found everywhere one looked: hotels, restaurants, tea- and lunchrooms, even in zeppelins and promenade decks of the luxury steam liners. Heavy early WW2 bombings destroyed the buildings of the English manufacturer in 1940 and ended production of Lloyd-Loom products. Lloyd-Loom furniture pieces from the twenties and thirties are now very sought after collectors items.

Anno 2000 the Lloyd-Loom material still lost none of its beauty, radiance and splendour. Even the consumer rediscovered the Lloyd-Loom material. Due to the strong rise in market demand, production of the material has been restarted, still in the original fashion, but of course on modernized machinery. However, since only a small number of manufacturers are equipped with the right tools for manufacturing, the choice and availability in the marketplace are rather small. Luigi Lloyd Loom is one of the very few Belgian manufacturers that succeeded in applying the Lloyd-Loom material in a very exclusive fashion.

Rattan (Calamus)

Rattan (Calamus) This is the family name for a species found in the jungles of South-East Asia. One of the better known varieties is Manou, that has its origin on the isle of Sumatra in Indonesia.
This cane's core is porous and is made up of long fibres that make it very bendable.
These manou stems will occasionally grow out to 150 meters in length, with a diameter varying from 20 to 40 mm.
Exclusive Rattan furniture The harvesting is still manual labour and is done by the local agricultural population. After removal of the outer layer for different colour lacquering later on, every stem is cut to the correct length and is then manually selected with regard to quality, colour and diameter. Excessive juices and fluids are removed in an oil bath. A natural drying process concludes the stem production.
10 Years later, the plant is ready for a new harvest, so from an ecological point of view, there is no threat whatsoever to the continuity of the rainforest.
Cane is a strong but very flexible material with irregular surface colorations and a wide variety of overall colouring. These colours emphasise the natural and original radiance of the furniture.

Treatment Rattan (Calamus)

The base frame of a rattan furniture piece is produced by steam-heating a rattan stem and bending it into the desired shape by use of a mould. Once cooled, several of these bent stems are joined together -by means of screws, joints and weavings- to a sturdy and stable frame.
For the weavings, Woven rattan core is often used. This material originates from the rattan core and is machine-cut in different diameters.
The creation of a piece is done entirely by hand. Because of this, every piece is unique and small discrepancies in size and colouring are unavoidable. It are these properties however, that give our furniture its distinctive look-and-feel and that make each product a one of a kind.
For OUR furniture only the very best quality of rattan stems is selected and used. Superb paints en lacquers emphasise the originality and guarantee an exquisite look for years to come.
Rattan furniture needs little or no maintenance. Use of a moist cloth or soft brush will do. Most cushion pillows can be zipped off to be cleaned separately.

Outdoor

Polyethylene

  • This is a true-to-nature plastic rattan imitation which is weather resistant, colourfast, recyclable and environmentally-friendly. Further advantages:
  • Polythene is completely recyclable.
  • Polythene does not have any harmful effects on the environment when it is burnt. The material can also be melted down and used in other products. Polythene is maintenance-free.
  • An item of polythene furniture never has to be painted.
  • Polythene is very strong and can only break in extreme circumstances.
  • Polythene's colour is thoroughly baked-in during the manufacturing process. As a result the colour will never be damaged as happens with paint, which can peel off or can reveal cracks. The colour retains its liveliness and painting is never necessary.
  • Polythene is strong, lasting and maintenance free.

Aluminium

This material can be obtained on the market in many qualities. However, no concessions are being made with Luigi® aluminium, either with the wall thickness of the material or its finish. Aluminium is lightweight and thus easy to use. We use aluminium both in its authentic silver-grey colour and with a rattan-imitation finish.

Teak

Teak is a hardwood with unique characteristics. The wood's high resistance to water can be ascribed to the oily substances that it contains. During outdoor use it will weather after some time to a silver-grey colour which, however, does not adversely affect its quality. Teak is breathtakingly beautiful due to its hues and offers unequalled durability. It is resistant to decay, even when in contact with the ground. Teak will begin to live under the influence of the weather and develop hairline cracks, but this is a natural process that does not harm the quality.
